2017–2021 Capital Investment Plan
The 2017-2021 Capital Investment Plan is a five-year capital plan for MassDOT and MBTA investments. The investment strategies identified as part of Focus40 will inform future iterations of the CIP.
Silver Line Gateway
MassDOT’s Silver Line Gateway project is extending bus-rapid transit service, known as BRT, from the growing Seaport District across Boston Harbor into East Boston and Chelsea.
Green Line Extension
The Green Line Extension project is an initiative of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). This important project will extend existing MBTA Green Line service from a relocated Lechmere Station in East Cambridge to Union Square in Somerville and College Avenue in Medford
South Station Expansion
MassDOT is examining opportunities to add capacity at South Station and create a new layover facility to accommodate additional trains.
South Coast Rail
The South Coast Rail project is working to restore 52 miles of commuter rail service between Boston and the Massachusetts South Coast.
Everett Transit Action Plan
MassDOT is undertaking a transit study for the City of Everett to identify deficiencies in transit service and to develop short, medium, and long-term solutions to better connect Everett residents to other places in Everett as well as to the Boston region.

MAPC's Metro Future
MetroFuture is a 30-year plan to make a Greater Boston Region – to better the lives of the people who live and work in Metropolitan Boston between now and 2030. The plan supports smart growth and regional collaboration.
Boston Region MPO
The Boston Region MPO’s Long-Range Transportation Plan identifies goals, evaluates needs, and sets priorities, which will be supported with federal funding that the MPO receives for planning and programming investments in transportation capital projects.

Go Boston 2030 is a City of Boston initiative to envision a bold transportation future for the city.
Envision Cambridge is a community-wide process to develop a comprehensive plan for a more livable, sustainable, and equitable Cambridge.
Kendall Square Mobility Task Force
The Kendall Square Mobility Task Force process is providing a holistic approach to mobility issues in the Kendall Square area of Cambridge. Led by the City of Cambridge, the Task Force is identifying projects and policy initiatives in support of the continued success of Kendall.
Newton-in-Motion will produce a comprehensive guide towards a more equitable, economically and environmentally sustainable multimodal transportation system.

Better Rapid Transit for Greater Boston
The Barr Foundation convened the Greater Boston BRT Study Group to better understand whether and where BRT could work in the region. This report outlines the Study Group’s conclusions.
